Madam
Foreperson
Melvin Speight's Story
As the jury enters the courtroom, all hushed whispers
ceased and all eyes followed them. The Court Crier cried "
This court is now back in session, Madam Foreperson please
rise". I watched Madam Foreperson intently as she rose,
trying to remember how she looked before she left to deliberate.
Is there any difference in her? Is there any difference in any of
them? I realized at that same moment that I'll only remember the
heart crushing testimony and tears of my family, friends, and
associates pleading to spare my life.
Mr. Speight, would you please rise......
Madam Foreperson with respect to.......My memory of the words
that succeeded eludes me, my full attention was on Madam
Foreperson, as I believe all who were present were as well. to
this day, I can't remember anyone or anything before or since
having my attention to the extent in which Madam Foreperson
received on June 25, 1993.
I wanted to see her response to words she uttered. Thinking to
myself, would they, can they impose a sentence of death on me?
Not wanting to know the answer to my own question, Madam
Foreperson words were as thunder in a viscous storm. "We the
jury unanimously sentence the defendant to death". Blinded
with pain Madam Foreperson disappeared from my sight, lightening
had struck and it hurt.
Where do I stand concerning Capitol Punishment? Are we committing
the same crime we condemn others for committing? When will we as
a society stop the state sanctioned murders? More importantly
what can I do to stop it? The hidden reality behind Capitol
Punishment" is that it is an Intentional Killing and no
matter what one chooses to call it, it is murder.
Melvin Speight is incarcerated on Pennsylvania's Death Row. He
fights his conviction vigorously, but because of the forces
against him, he will not be able to succeed alone.
