Abdullah H. Ibn-Sadiika was arrested in 1984 based on falsified charging documents, convicted by way of perjury from the Commonwealth's witnesses, subsequently sentenced to life in prison and denied a direct appeal for fourteen years because his trial lawyer deliberately filed his appeal both late and at an improper court docket number, which the PA Superior Court deemed waived all Abdullah's rights to an appeal and incredibly which that court let stand.
On March 17, 1983 at 2:10 P.M., the body of Eleanore Johnson, age 56, of Brushton Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was found dead in her apartment with a kitchen knife embedded in her chest. Her apartment served as also a "speak easy" frequented by night by an assortment of persons. Mrs. Johnson was acquainted with Abdullah because she had bought nearly a 100lbs of frozen meat from Abdullah by way of her personal check and resold same to her speak-easy customers several days before her death. There was evidence to suggest that Abdullah was among the last persons to see Eleanore Johnson alive. Her body was removed from the crime scene and taken to the county morgue by Allegheny County deputy coroner Floyd C. Coles, following his on-site investigation with police. The cause of death was determined to be a single stab wound to the chest. The manner of death was deemed homicide.
The murder of Eleanore Johnson remained an open criminal case for more than 17 1/2 months. During that time period, one Crystal Ocasio Saunders, was sitting in the county jail convicted in an unrelated case of robbery and aggravated assault upon an 83-year old woman. Shortly before she was to be sentenced, police assert that she contacted them and told them that Abdullah was the murderer of Eleanore Johnson, that he told her (Crystal) all about it and gave her all the proceeds from the robbery, many items of which were jewelry that police later retrieved from Crystal. There was nothing incriminating linking Abdullah to the crime. Floyd C. Coles then issued his arrest warrant on October 9, 1984 and Abdullah was arrested. Crystal's own lawyer appeared during trial and testified on behalf of Abdullah that Crystal had made her allegations against Abdullah in an attempt to gain a light sentence in her own case. Once she had made the allegations, prompted by police, she was stuck and beyond the point of no return. The police and prosecutors, as well as Abdullah's own trial lawyer, simply carried forth their plan using Crystal and concealed all evidence which existed and tended to establish Abdullah's innocence, and gained his conviction. Matters remained that way for more than 13years, until the F.B.I., via the Freedom of Information Act, released 56-pages of evidence supporting Abdullah's claim of innocence which the police, prosecutors and Abdullah's trial lawyer claimed throughout never existed. Crystal denied she knew or frequented Johnson's home, however the court appointed private investigator found a witness placing Crystal outside Mrs. Johnson's apartment before her death, but trial counsel concealed that in information from the jury as well.
